St. Ffraid's elegant Cross is a true Millennium project launched by the Trearddur Bay Millennium group and successfully completed under the leadership of secretary Richard Thomas. The cross was erected in the year 2000 and was dedicated by the Bishop of Bangor on September 10th.
The wall enclosing St. Ffraid's cross was constructed from stone taken from the demolished Armeinia Chapel at Holyhead.
The cross was designed by Dr. J. K. Roberts and was sculpted by Meic Watts, assisted by Justin and Tim Kellett. The stone for the cross came from the Aber Quarry at Moelfre on Anglesey.
The Rush Cross of St. Bride is incorporated into its head. Around the plinth are four inscriptions in Welsh, English, Latin and Irish:-
Y SANTES FFRAID GWEDDIA DROSOM NI
SAINT BRIDE PRAY FOR US
SANCTA BRIGIDA ORA PRO NOBIS
A BRIHD BHEANNAITHE GUIDH ORAINN
On the column is St. Ffraid's hand holding the eternal flame of Kildare, together with the inscription:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD
A.D. 2000
St.Ffraid is more widely known as St. Bride . There is a cathedral and a Holy Well dedicated to her in Kildare, Co. Wicklow in Ireland. She is considered by the Irish people as second only to St. Patrick their patron saint. Legend has it that she crossed the Irish sea "On a sod" in aprox 500AD, landing in Trearddur Bay, where she founded a church. The original Church has been washed away and the burial mound has almost gone. St. Ffaid is portrayed crossing the sea in the East Window of the present St. Ffraid's church.
