In 1982 the Delta Group joined with the Nettle site at Oldham to become one company - "Delta Accessories and Domestic Switchgear". Then in 1988 the same company's title became MEM (250v) Ltd in recognition of the fine reputation of the M.E.M. in the electrical. This meant that the new company could provide a whole range of accessories and electrical control equipment for the domestic market, and could support their own sales force dedicated to the domestic market. Holyhead became responsible for several areas of engineering - designs, Engineering standards, Production Engineering, Test and Quality functions and more. New skills were required in all areas and a great deal of people and equipment investment was made. The site became one where engineering expertise was predominant.
The site achieved BS5000/ISO 9002 in 1987 - maintaining accreditation ever since.
The investment made in this site really paid off, as in 1989 they introduced the first British Designed Miniature Circuit Breakers to the market - being designed, tested and manufactured at Holyhead. This was part of a new range of modular Consumer Units - the Memera 2000 range of products. They were amongst the foremost in design the quality in Europe. The Memera 2000 have helped the company to increase its share of what was to become a rapidly declining market.
Since 19991 the demand for domestic switchgear has declined by over a third with the prospect of recovery being firmly bound to the housing market, but because of the appeal of this product along with its soundness the company have maintained the workforce at pre-recession levels, unlike other less fortunate British companies who have had to let their workforce go with a large number of redundancies or factory closures.
The lessons learnt at Holyhead were clear, and it has had to be developed to be a leading design and manufacturing site of medium voltage switchgear, to challenge the world with its new high performance products - as only companies producing products of high quality would survive. The customer had to be satisfied and new technology and new working methods were seen as essential in order to increase productivity. Training was also a vital element in achieving these aims. The company remains part of the Delta group of companies, who have invested several millions of pounds in the site.
The labour turnover figures are low and the majority of the direct workforce have remained loyal to the company for a number of years - begin asked to cope with many changed in the product range, new technology, and new production methods.
It has been necessary to train the workforce in continued..
