The "Action Group" working for Holyhead is pleased to announce that they have commissioned a life-size statue of Christ the Good Shepherd to celebrate and to commemorate the Millennium in Holyhead.
No actual physical description of Christ is given in the Gospels.  Upon advice from local clergy and their congregations they asked for this portrayal to be that of a robust, six foot, first century AD Palestinian, aged about 30 years with customary beard, and wearing sandals.
They asked Mr. Kevin Harlow BA, a renowned, Leeds based sculptor to create this sculpture.  Mr. Harlow specialises in fibre glass, marble and bronze, and has public works in London, York, Liverpool, Paris Los Angeles, and Jerusalem.  He says, "This is a difficult and sensitive subject.  The Christ I see is at one with the elements living much of his life out of doors.  Physically strong, He is a powerful man, both inspiring and humble.  I am  not aware of another proposed public Millennium statue of Christ in the UK, Ireland or Europe".
The statue cost around £5,000.  The Action Group say that they are still working very hard to raise the sum and will carry on doing so for the next few months.  They need a great deal of  support.
Around 4.5 million visitors come to Anglesey each year, and there are 3 million people living in the Dublin catchment area.  The group hope that some will come to Holyhead to see this fine original work of art.
The Director, of the premiere arts centre in Holyhead - the Ucheldre Centre Mr. Michael Gould has very kindly offered the group one of six prepared sites in the Centre's garden, for the statue.
The group have asked Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones AM/MP for his support.  This he gave willingly, and he unveiled this
wonderful statue on Saturday 4th November, 2000
